Community Relations Connect: Sessions

Community Relations Connect, is an emerging network for community relations and social performance practitioners throughout Africa. It is a community of practice for people to come together to share, learn and improve their practices.  Community Relations Connect (CRC) has been catalysed by the urgent need to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. CRC is hosted by Synergy Global Consulting and is supported by the International Council for Metals and Mining (ICMM)

Community engagement in the context of COVID-19 | 29 July 2020

Three industry practitioners, guide us through this conversation. Mary Boyden, Managing Director at Eighth Fire Solutions Inc.; Josephine Peters from De Beers Group in South Africa and Maselaganye Peter Matshi from the Machidi Development Foundation in South Africa.

Representing different voices in the system, sharing their experiences of the engagement challenges of COVID-19 and how they have adopted engagement and relationship practice to meet this altered context.

The following key questions guided the discussion:

  • Which of the pre-COVID engagement challenges are most significant for you during this time of COVID-19?
  • In what ways is COVID-19 (and increasing use of online engagement) exacerbating existing inequalities and fault lines (e.g. inequitable access to resources [data], information, further entrenched power-imbalances, etc)?
  • What advice do you have in terms of how to overcome these challenges, while still be able to build meaningful relationships during this time?
