Community Relations Connect, is an emerging network for community relations and social performance practitioners throughout Africa. It is a community of practice for people to come together to share, learn and improve their practices.  Community Relations Connect (CRC) has been catalysed by the urgent need to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. CRC is hosted by Synergy Global Consulting and is supported by the International Council for Metals and Mining (ICMM)

How to work sensitively with trauma and mental health in a community setting | 22 April 2020

With the COVID pandemic it became clear that many of the safeguards put in place, to protect the most vulnerable, are not robust enough. Compounding this, is the fragility of many of our mining and energy communities – COVID-19 is the latest of a series of traumas, further risking to erode community coherence and resilience.

Holle Wlokas and Alison McCallum were in conversation with Dr Lane Benjamin and Michael Abrams of R-Cubed. R-Cubed is a professional team of trauma disruptors who work to address individual, organisational and social problems stemming from trauma in order to help people, companies and communities heal.

During this session the following was discussed:

  • Our response to COVID-19 and how this can trigger intergenerational trauma /effects.
  • What it means to have a trauma-sensitive approach in our work, and the benefits of this.
  • Practical guidance on how to develop and implement sustainable and sensitive interventions at community level, whilst also responding to COVID-19 emergencies.
