ICMM: Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) Guidance

Global

In 2022, Synergy worked with the ICMM to update its 2012 Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) Guidance document. The review involved workshops with ICMM member companies, a detailed benchmarking of the Guidance against other good practice guidance documents, and an update to the text to ensure that it covers emerging issues, trends, and regulatory standards, as well as captures best practices.

In addition to the main text, Synergy developed a set of HRDD Tools to provide practical support to companies, operations, and practitioners. The tools include how to integrate a human rights lens into everyday company operations; a human rights maturity matrix to support continuous improvement for both companies and operations; a methodology and metrics for how to assess salient human rights issues; different approaches to human rights assessments; how to integrate human rights into business risk processes; and conducting due diligence across supply chains, and how to integrate human rights across business levels and functions. More recently, tools have been added for respecting human rights defenders, as well as the right to a clean, healthy and Sustainable Environment.

Synergy further supported the roll-out of the Guidance update via a series of engagements and workshops with member companies. Since Synergy led the update and development of new tools, the ICMM HRDD Guidance has been widely used and is regarded as a key resource in the mining sector and beyond for leading practices in ensuring practical alignment with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (the UNGPs).
