ICMM: Social Performance Tools
Global
Synergy’s work on the ICMM Social Performance Tools supported large, global companies to strengthen their management of social impacts, including mitigating risks, enhancing positive outcomes, and building trusted relationships with affected communities.
In 2019, Synergy worked with ICMM to develop a suite of six tools designed to support social performance practitioners in building organisational capability and strengthening social performance systems. The tools draw on practical insights from both ICMM member companies and external experts, reflecting decades of experience in integrating the management of social risks and impacts into core business processes.
The tools comprise a set of practical components intended to build a shared understanding of social performance and support its integration across mining companies. These include an introductory resource defining social performance, a maturity matrix to assess organisational capability, and a competency framework outlining required skills, alongside guidance on integrating community engagement and social performance across business functions, and targeted support for leaders to strengthen the leadership, culture and systems needed for effective implementation.
The tools are used by social practitioners to support internal communication on the integration of social performance into business decision-making and to advance more systematic approaches across organisations. They also provide non-specialists with a clearer understanding of what social performance is, why it matters, and how it can be integrated into day-to-day activities.
