Supporting long-term Community and Social Performance capability at QMM
Madagascar
QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) operates in a complex and high-expectation social context, where effective community and social performance (CSP) requires not only robust plans, but strong organisational capability to manage diverse risks, impacts, and relationships over time.
Since 2022, Synergy has supported QMM through a multi-year partnership spanning a CSP diagnostic, strategy development, and sustained implementation support. This has included the development of a medium-term CSP strategy structured around organisational and operational workstreams; support to stakeholder strategies; strengthening of grievance management systems; advisory support on impact and risk management (including GISTM, human rights, and land-related considerations); development of socio-economic baselines; and targeted support to CSP governance and planning processes.
A central focus of the engagement has been building internal technical capability. Through repeated trainings, workshops, and on-the-job mentoring, Synergy supported the development of practical skills in areas such as stakeholder engagement planning, grievance handling, impact management, and inter-departmental coordination.
As a result, QMM has strengthened its ability to manage community relationships and social risks in a more consistent, informed, and proactive manner, embedding CSP more firmly into day-to-day operations and organisational decision-making.
